THE BIRMINGHAM HOTEL
Nestled in the heart of Fitzroy, The Birmingham Hotel, or as the locals refer to it ‘The Birmy” is located in the heart of Fitzroy. Established in July 1918, 4 months before WW1, this historical pub has a rich history and while the exterior remains the same the interior has been transformed over the years, with the latest addition being the conversion of the first floor that was formally the home of publican and VFL legend Alan ”Butch” Gale who played for Fitzroy.

During the demolition phase we uncover historical newspaper sheets under the carpet which gave us beautiful insight into the former owner’s world. We have converted Butch Gales former home into a hidden Bar and lounge area that now can be enjoyed by all. Manager Peter and I had the same vision for the space and tried to capture some of its former beauty by expose the existing brickwork on select walls and selecting materials that would have been used in pubs at the time such as tessellated tiles and warm timbers to compliment the pubs history, but with a modern pub vibe.
